    Text Vernon Pereira. Oct. 23, 1926 - Oct. 22, 2009. Vernon "Buddy" Pereira, 82, of Vacaville, Calif., passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, at home after a long illness. Vern was born Oct. 23, 1926, in Honolulu. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and sister. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; son, Tony; daughter, Margaret; his three grandchildren, Emmaline, Austin and Ian; and many cousins in Hawaii and on the mainland.
    Vernon grew up in Oahu and spent his summers working at his Uncles ranch on Makawao. He loved fishing, swimming, horseback riding and, of course, surfing. On the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, at he age of 15, he was an eyewitness to the beginning of World War II. While recovering at Queens Hospital, he heard the low-flying Japanese planes attacking Pearl Harbor. Right after graduating High School he was drafted by the Navy and then the Army Air Corps. He entered the service as a corporal and was stationed in Europe soon becoming sergeant. He spoke of his time in Austria often. After his discharge, he moved to San Francisco to pursue his degree in arts and crafts. It was there that he met, and later married, Patricia. They settled in Vacaville in 1956. He worked as a correctional officer at San Quentin, CMF and Folsom State Prison. At CMF one of his responsibilities was the bi-yearly arts and crafts shows as well as being a correctional counselor. Retiring as a Senior Librarian in 1994. He was an active 3rd and 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Mary's Catholic Church. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
    On Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 10:45 a.m., there will be a rosary immediately followed by the Mass of the Resurrection at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Hawaiian attire is appreciated.
