      Maria Eugenia Fernandes applied to leave Madeira and emigrate to the Sandwich Islands on March 7, 1884 in Funchal. The official file appears to be No. 781. She is recorded on the passport application as daughter of Antonio Fernandes and Anna Eugenia Xavier, natives of Jorge. She is accompanied by her husband, Manuel Perreira, laborer, son of Antonio Pereira and Maria Joaquina, and a native of Ponta do Sol, living in Sao Pedro [Funchal], and their daughters Maria, 5, and Clara, 2, natives of Sao Pedro [Funchal]. Maria Eugenia is described as: "Age 23, short stature, blue eyes, black hair, clear complexion, round face, regular mouth, regular nose"
      Documents show Maria Eugenia's age is 23 in June 1884 when interviewed for emigration, making her birth year 1861. The discrepancy from the 1858 date on her headstone is not resolved. Extraction copy in possession of Donald Rodrigues, Alameda, California. 121202v.
